Given the fact that La Passione Italiana, a slightly grimy looking eatery at Yonge and St. Clair, has been able to survive in a neighbourhood packed with more pricey but more attractive Italian restaurants for years, I figured it must be offering pretty good value.
When I finally did check it out, thanks to a Groupon offer, what I found was that you pay pretty much the same prices for food that’s not nearly as good. We ate:
- Oversalty pizza
- A huge portion of pleasingly gooey Gorgonzola gnocchi that I could have stopped by Sobey’s and made myself
- Uninspired arugula salad with roasted vegetables.
But what really pissed me off was that they charged sales tax for $40 on a $20 Groupon.
I don’t want to hate on them but I won’t be going back. It’s still Capocaccia for pizza all the way.
